Historical Dictionary of Pakistan (Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East)
Shahid Javed BurkiThis extensively expanded and updated edition covers this country's history through a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and some 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries presenting the more important persons, places, and events as well as salient aspects of the economy, society, culture, and religion.
Author Burki, an economist with a distinguished career in the Pakistani administration, also wrote the previous editions of this title, published in 1991 and 1999. For this edition he added several entries on what he calls "the 'Muslimization' and 'Islamization' of Pakistani society." New coverage reflects events since the terrorist attack on the U.S. in 2001 as well as the earthquake of October 8, 2005, and Pakistan's economic growth, among the highest in the developing world. The volume is part of the publisher's Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East series.
